Music Education: Getting Started

Resources for the study of the teaching of music

Locations

Maag Library houses various formats of musical materials, including:

  • Reference books, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, indices, and bio-bibliographies - located in the Reference Collection on the main floor and in the Curriculum Resource Center. Some also in the MMC Reference on the 3rd floor.
  • Music Course Reserves (scores & recordings) - located in the Multimedia Center. Must be requested by course name and/or number, professor's name, title of material.
  • Music Course Reserves (books) - located at the Circulation Desk on the main floor. Must be requested by course name and/or number, professor's name, title of material.
  • Books - located primarily on the 5th floor.
  • Scores - located on the 3rd floor outside the Multimedia Center.  Oversized and miniature (study) scores are shelved separately.
  • Sound Recordings - CDs (compact discs) are located in display cabinets on the right side of the Multimedia Center. LPs (vinyl recordings) are on shelves located in the back room of the MMC.
  • Projected Media - DVDs are located in display cabinets on the left side of the Multimedia Center. VHS recordings are located in the MMC offices.

The Library also provides the following facilities and services relating to music:

  • Computer Workstations (Macintosh) - located in the Multimedia Center (others available in the Reference Dept.)
  • Copiers  - located in the alcove near the elevators on the main floor and also on the 6th floor
  • Microfilm Reader-Printers - located in the Microforms area on the 3rd floor
  • Listening/Viewing Facilities - located in the Multimedia Center
  • Personal Audio Headsets - can be obtained at the MMC Desk. 
  • Speicalized Reference & Research Assistance - available from the Multimedia Librarian (Multimedia Center, 3rd floor of Maag Library)

    LC Classifications

    Maag Library uses the Library of Congress Classification Scheme (LC) to determine the location of its materials.  The LC system is an alpha-numeric system.  This means that the call numbers contain letters and numbers.  The letters tell the user the general subject matter of the material; the numbers provide more specific information about the material.

    M = Music or Scores

    ML = Music Literature and/or Music History

    MT = Music Theory and Pedagogy
