Communication Studies: Getting Started

General resources for research in the area of Communication

OneSearch is Maag Library's discovery layer and it's on the middle tab on our homepage.

Use it to search MaagNET, OhioLINK, and most of our databases, ALL AT THE SAME TIME! Be sure to use the "limiters" in the left sidebar to narrow down your results.

Finding a Book on the Shelf

The first place to look for library materials is MaagNET, YSU's online library catalog.

When first looking for items in the library, search for Keywords or Subject Headings.

  • Keyword searches look in the title, author, contents, and other fields for the words you entered.
  • Subject Heading searches look for specific subject headings (descriptors assigned to the item by a librarian) that match your search terms.

Most books and other library materials in Maag Library are assigned a Library of Congress Classification number (call number) and are arranged by those numbers on library shelves. Most call numbers begin with a one-, two-, or three-letter designation which represents a broad subject area.  For instructions on how to read a call number see Reading Call Numbers.

When you have found references in MaagNet for the material you want, note the call number, location and status, usually in a box below the bibliographic information.

Items in the General or Oversize Collections (see Locations Listed in MaagNet for descriptions) are found on floors 3 through 6A. The location charts in Reference and by the elevators use the letters at the beginning of the call number to show you which subjects and/or call numbers may be found on which floor.

If you are looking for an item that is not owned by Maag Library, you may expand your search to all of Ohio using OhioLINK. The easiest way is to click the blue "Search OhioLINK" button from your MaagNET catalog search, which will take your search and run it in OhioLINK.

You can also go directly to OhioLINK at but it's usually best to make sure Maag Library doesn't already own it before searching OhioLINK.

If you need material that is not in Maag Library OR in OhioLINK, you will need to use Interlibrary Loan (on the Maag Library home page under the Services tab).
