Black Press Research Collective
The Black Press Research Collective (BPRC) offers a collection of African American newspapers that are often difficult to locate. This site lists newspapers archives, digital versions of newspapers, and websites about African American press. These sources come from multiple states and date back to the 1800's.
The above link leads to a list of digitized African American newspapers from the Library of Congress that can be organized by state, title, number of issues, or earliest publication. These newspapers were first published between 1850 and 1935.
Historical African American Newspapers Available Online by Marist College
This guide from the library at Marist College lists many freely accessible historical and current African American newspapers. They can be browsed in alphabetical order, in chronological order, or by region of the United States.
The African American Experience in Ohio, 1850-1920
This digital collection offers images of issues from 11 African American newspapers from Ohio. The site also offers background and historical information regarding each of the 11 newspapers.
The Afro-American Newspapers Black History Archives
This site offers online archives of The Baltimore Afro American newspaper, which was established in 1892. The national and Washington versions of this newspaper are also available through this site.
The Buffalo Criterion
The Buffalo Criterion was published between 1925 and 1973 in New York. This site allows you to browse those issues by year, or you can browse through each front page.
The California Eagle
The California Eagle is listed as the oldest African American newspaper in the western United States. It was in publication from 1879 to 1964. The above link leads to microform copies of various issues of the California Eagle that can be clicked through and read page by page.
The Carolina Times
The Carolina Times began in 1919 and is still in publication today. This site shows digital copies of issues of the Carolina Times from 1937 to 1982, which can be browsed by year.
The Colored Citizen
This site allows access to issues of The Colored Citizen, a newspaper that was published in Pensacola, Florida from 1914 through 1958 or 1959. The images of the various issues are searchable by words or phrases.
This site offers background information of Freedom's Journal, which was first published in March of 1827. There are 103 issues available as PDFs, ranging from March 1827 to March 1829.
This site offers digital versions of issues of the Indianapolis Recorder, which was established in 1897. Issues from 1899 through 2005 are available through this site, but issues from 1917-1925 and half of the issues from year 1932 are missing. You can search for keywords within the articles and browse through the issues by year. There is also an option to either view an issue as an image or a more clear, typed transcription of the articles.
The Tribunal Aid
This site allows you to view issues of the Tribunal Aid, a North Carolina based African American newspaper. The issues can be browsed by year from 1973 to 1976.
