What is OhioLINK's Wiley open access agreement?
OhioLINK and Wiley first began an agreement with hybrid open access publishing benefits in March 2022. Now faculty, and staff at most OhioLINK member institutions have the ability to publish open access (OA) journal articles in both hybrid and fully open access journals published by Wiley and Hindawi at no additional cost to either the author or the institution. There is a maximum number of articles that may be published as open access each year under the agreement.
What is Open Access? What does hybrid mean?
Open Access (OA) is a way to publish that makes content freely available with no subscription or access fees. Journal publishers were traditionally compensated for the editorial and distribution work of providing scholarly articles through journal subscription fees. In order to make articles open, publishers can instead be compensated for their editorial services through an Article Publication Charge (APC), which varies by journal title. OhioLINK's agreement with Wiley gives authors at member institutions the open access option without paying any additional fees. Open access publication often also includes licensing the work to allow for reuse, such as Creative Commons licenses.
OhioLINK's 2024-2026 open access deal with Wiley applies to articles published in both their hybrid and fully open access journals. "Hybrid" means that the journal publishes articles that are available both by subscription and through open access. Fully open access journals refer to those that only allow authors to publish articles as open access.

Who is eligible to publish open access under this agreement?
In order to be eligible to publish open access at no cost in a Wiley journal under this agreement, the corresponding author of the article (see below for definition) must be affiliated with an institution that subscribes to OhioLINK’s Electronic Journal Center (EJC), a database of electronic journal articles from scholarly publishers. Wiley's Institutional Funding Tool allows authors to determine if they are eligible for open access funding through an institutional deal with Wiley.
There is a maximum number of articles across all OhioLINK institutions that may be published as open access each year under this agreement. Should this limit be reached, authors will no longer see the option to request their article be published as open access at no charge.
Corresponding authors affiliated with an eligible institution who are publishing an eligible article type in an eligible journal are offered the option to publish their article as open access under the agreement. The process differs slightly for hybrid and fully open access journals.
For Hybrid Journals: When a corresponding author's article has been approved for publication in a Wiley Hybrid Journal, they are offered the option to publish their article as open access. See Wiley: Make Your Article Open Access in a Hybrid Journal.
For Fully Open Access Journals: When a corresponding author’s article is submitted for publication in a Wiley or Hindawi Fully Gold Open Access Journal, the corresponding author is able to apply to have the APC covered under an applicable funder or institution agreement. See Wiley: Publishing Your Article in a Fully Open Access Journal.
The corresponding author is the person who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process. Corresponding authors identify their institutional affiliation when they submit their article for publication. Providing an institutional email address is encouraged for confirming institution affiliation.
When can I publish open access articles under this agreement?
Access to the open access publishing benefits began January 1, 2024 and continue through December 31, 2026. This means that to publish an article as open access in a Wiley journal without paying an Article Publication Charge (APC), the article must be accepted for publication (if in a hybrid journal) or submitted for publication (if in a fully gold open access journal) during this period, and is subject to the availability of APC coverage.
What kind of articles are eligible for open access publishing under this agreement? Which journals are eligible?
Original research and review articles are eligible for open access publishing in any of Wiley's hybrid or fully open access journals under this deal.
See Wiley's List of Fully Open Access Journals and list of Hybrid Open Access Journals for titles and APC prices.
Occasionally, journals may switch from hybrid to fully gold open access. To help avoid confusion, Wiley has posted a list of journals changing from hybrid to fully gold open access for 2024 on their website.
Is there a limit to how many articles can be published as open access under this agreement?
There is an annual limit to the number of articles to be published as open access under this agreement across all OhioLINK member institutions, based on average output across all member libraries. Should the article cap be reached, authors will no longer see the option to request to publish their article as open access under the OhioLINK agreement.
Once the limit is reached, if the selected journal is hybrid, authors may choose to publish their articles as subscription access at no cost to them. In either hybrid or fully open access journals, authors may choose to fund their article as open access, with a 10% APC discount. See Wiley's List of Fully Open Access Journals and list of Hybrid Open Access Journals for information about APC prices.
